Going, going, all gone… All 314 lots of frames sold in this sale, most of them at prices way beyond their estimates. The highest was for this 19th century frame – a work of art in its own right – which made £1,500.

This sale set a new record auction price for a watercolour by Basil Ede (1931-2016). Nearly 60 bids were taken from phone bidders, absentee bidders and online bidders, with the hammer finally falling at £5,500 for the green woodpecker.  A companion piece sold for £3,400.

This stylish painting of Arab Greys by John Alexander Harrington Bird was purchased for £5,500 on behalf of Shirley Watts, wife of Charlie Watts. Shirley has a successful Arab Stud in Devon.

Good breeding of a different kind was also popular; this portrait of Caroline Lennox by Allan Ramsay sold for £9,000.

The dramatic oil painting of  Schevinengen Harbour by Cornelius Krieghoff  sold for £4,400 – an encouraging result as we will be offering one of his Canadian scenes, ‘The Pioneers’, for sale in our auction next month.
