RAGS TO RICHES RUSSIAN ARTIST

Cupid’s arrow pierced the heart of several bidders who competed for this beautiful portrait of a Young Girl by Alexei Harlamoff, selling for £6,000 against an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

Harlamoff was born into serfdom in Russia in 1840 but found fame and fortune in Paris painting portraits, where he became a prominent and influential member of the international art scene.

Lockdown nostalgia may have been responsible for driving prices higher than expected for this sunny view of Portofino which sold for £1,100…

TENNIS

… and who wouldn’t love to get outside and play tennis? A Tennis Match, Circle of John Lavery, oil on board, sold for £1,200

Country Life

Romantic dreams of escaping to the country may also have fuelled desire for this charming 19th century painting by Edmund Bristow (1787-1876), which sold well above estimate for £3,000.

Going, going, all gone… 

All 314 lots of frames sold in this sale, most of them at prices way beyond their estimates. The highest was for this 19th century frame – a work of art in its own right – which made £1,500.

A new record auction price for a watercolour by Basil Ede

Nearly 60 bids were taken from phone bidders, absentee bidders and online bidders, with the hammer finally falling at £5,500 for this watercolour of a green woodpecker.  A companion piece sold for £3,400.

This stylish painting of Arab Greys by John Alexander Harrington Bird was purchased for £5,500

– on behalf of Shirley Watts, wife of Charlie Watts. Shirley has a successful Arab Stud in Devon.

This portrait of Caroline Lennox by Allan Ramsay sold for £9,000

A dramatic oil painting of  Schevinengen Harbour

by Cornelius Krieghoff  sold for £4,400 – an encouraging result as we will be offering one of his Canadian scenes, ‘The Pioneers’, for sale in our next auction on 18th February
